Farm ID 3645
U&I Farm is a smallholding diversified farm practicing regenerative and organic growing techniques. Located in Penobscot County in the town of Garland, it consists of 70 acres. 7 acres are in pasture and tillable. Additionally there is a young ½ acre food forest, vegetable garden and a small number of established fruit trees; cherry, pear, apple and crab apple. The food forest is 4 years old and follows a permaculture orchard design. There are approximately 25 hazels along with a wide variety of edible native berries, elders, peaches, plums, chestnuts and carpathian walnuts. We are adding other types of trees and vines, and expanding our grapes. We are working on developing nursery cuttings, along with herbs and flowers.
Our sugaring operation has approximately 150 taps with room for a modest expansion. We are using reverse osmosis and burn around 2 cords a season in the sugar house. We are also experimenting with agroforestry, growing ginseng and goldenseal. Most of the property is pasture returning to forest, with excellent stands of cedar, spruce, pine and hemlock.
U&I Farm uses no tractors or tillers, with our registered fjord horses intended to provide any logging or other work. We are tested and PFAS free, both in the soil and the delicious water with an excellent well. There is a small horse barn along with a decent sized shop, sauna, the sugarhouse and a hay barn.
The property was used as dairy pasture until the late 60’s. It was sold and became a homestead with horses and gardens. The prior owner raised sheep and sold hay following organic practices. Our vision is for U&I Farm to provide organic and diverse agricultural produce for family, friends and the larger community, respecting the soil, wildlife and the environment. We would love to share this beautiful property, find some like minded folks to help steward the land. It would be great to perhaps collaborate on our current projects, the food forest nursery, a colt for foals, agroforestry, some value added products. Check us out on Instagram.com/uandiorganicfarm
