Farm ID 3160

  1. Farm ID 3160
Property Description:

The land owner would like someone to keep the farm going with vegetables, herbs, fruit, berries, flowers, bees, or even as a CSA or CSG.  Maybe someone has other ideas. There are endless possibilities. We could workout living arrangements. The view is spectacular and 3 acres have direct southern exposure. There is an 8-foot fence around one acre and the other 2 acres slope down. In spring and fall, a small pond appears. Our land has a beautiful view of Cadillac Mountain on Mt. Desert Island and surrounding mountains. From our deck on a clear night you can see the constellations.

There have only been 4 families that have lived on this farm since 1829. We have all farmed the land. It sits on a dead-end street between Lamoine State Park and Lamoine Beach. The land and the views make it a great place to walk or bike. Please come see the Cottage Farm and what you could make of it!

The farmhouse was built in 1829 by the Googins family. At that time, there was 40 acres on the other side of the road extending to the ocean (Raccoon Cove). On our present side, there was more than the 4 acres we now have. Originally, the land extended to the water on Eastern Bay. Somewhere before 1900, the Merchant family bought this land. They farmed it and had a dairy farm.

When the farmhouse was built in 1829, it included fireplaces upstairs and downstairs and 2 chimneys. There has been much renovation. The house now has 1 chimney with a new stainless steel liner. Tom and I put a new heating system in the home in 2013 and 2 woodstoves (Waterford airtight). The house has 3 bedrooms, an office, and a large alcove with cathedral windows and ceiling upstairs. Downstairs there is a bedroom, bath, sitting room with new Anderson windows overlooking one of the orchards, kitchen, nook, and large mudroom built in 2001, a glassed-in front porch, and a deck on the back with a greenhouse/screenhouse. We put on a new roof and extensive work was done (plumbing, electrical, etc). Plenty of room on the second floor for housing the right person. There is also the possibility of making an apartment in the upstairs of the barn. It has a beautiful western view from the old hayloft.

The land owner has indicated that this land would be well suited for and support bees, as well as a great location for mushrooms!

Equipment includes:
Riding mower (Whites), BCS professional tiller with cutter bar and mower attachments, plus much more garden equipment in the barn. Also, solar herb dryer and solar cones and 2 barn refrigerators. The land owner would prefer that it continues to be farmed organically.

Telephone is preferred method of outreach.

Updated and still available as of 5/10/2022
