Past and present farming experience:

Janelle has been working on & managing organic vegetable operations since 2012 across New England, and Ross has experience working on livestock & veg farms in CT and OR. Together, we moved back to Maine to start New Spoke Farm in 2022. We run New Spoke on rented land in Gray. We grow mixed vegetables and a small amount of cut flowers - we have a CSA with several pick-up locations across the greater Portland area. We are looking for permanent land tenure in the wider, nearby area so we can continue to grow our CSA and provide on-farm offerings. We are committed, experienced production farmers and are excited to reconnect with the Maine farming community.

Here is a summary of the vision for my farming future and/or business plan:

We currently operate our own vegetable farm - New Spoke Farm - on rented land in Gray. We are entering our second season as New Spoke, and are expanding our offerings through two farmers markets, CSA, and wholesale to local grocers and small restaurants. We do not currently have any employees, but hope to have a few long-season employees within the next five years. We currently grow on less than 1/2 acre, which has been determined by our current land base and the fact that I (Janelle) do most of the day-to-day farming alone right now. Our goal is to increase production space to about 3 acres in total, with 1 rotating acre in year-round cover crop. We consider our farm to be no-till, and are deeply committed to organic production and are pursuing certification in 2023.
