Past and present farming experience:

Ben produced mixed vegetables for four complete seasons at four separate farms before completing three years of vegetable production earning his M.S. Horticulture (investigating soil microbiology in organic vegetable systems using mulch films). He has operated and consulted for commercial composting and potting media operations. Most recently has worked with Betsy to operate sites to breed and produce seed for a specialty seed company. He will continue this work remotely and by making site visits to international clients. Ben is ready to begin the family enterprise integrating vegetable seed, compost, potting media and nursery. Betsy Samuelson has been working towards farm ownership and a seed company of her own since 2011. She managed an organic farm and nursery for 7 years, and managed the local farmers market for a portion of those years. A decade of community organizing and policy change to support seed saving and sharing. Betsy has a gift for consensus building and believes in the power of community-level action, she is pursuing a Masters in Public Administration. We are energetic, ready to work for ourselves, and expecting our first child in May 2021!

Here is a summary of the vision for my farming future and/or business plan:

We intend to observe the land for a year or two while slowly building out (or cleaning up) to establish a good platform for a farm business. Meanwhile income from our agricultural consulting business will supplement any income generated by pilot projects that will certainly include seed garlic production, other vegetable herb and flower seed production. Pilot projects for the first transition year may include livestock (pigs, geese, meat chickens).
