Past and present farming experience:

As of fall 2019, I have been running my own farm for 2 years on leased land in Eliot, ME. I grow a variety of organic vegetables using minimal tillage practices for a CSA and two farmers markets.

Prior to starting my own farm, I apprenticed on a farm in Maine, managed part of a farm in California, volunteered on a permaculture farm in Nicaragua and worked for two urban agriculture startup companies in Boston and New York City.

Here is a summary of the vision for my farming future and/or business plan:

I am in the process of revising my business plan for this next step in my business.

My vision is to have a year round 250 member CSA with the pickup on the farm. Bringing people to the farm fosters stronger relationships between my customers and the farm and also significantly simplifies delivery logistics as well as increases overall efficiency on the farm. These are all important factors for the long term success of the farm. I hope to create a community space so that people want to come and spend time at the farm. This may include a farm store, places to sit and eat with friends and occasional music events.

I plan to have a few pigs and chickens primarily for personal use but also as an attraction for people and their children. Everyone wants to see the animals on a farm! In addition to the CSA, I will likely attend a farmers market to sell some of the excess product and as another way to engage and connect with the public.

As for the production practices, I plan to use generate the vast majority of my fertility from cover crops and green manures as well as to use minimal and no-till practices to improve the quality of my soil.

Farming in a fashion that contributes positively to the environment is very important to me. In doing so, I will try to reduce and hopefully eliminate all single use plastics on the farm as well as generate the majority of my energy needs from renewable sources such as solar power. I want to be a part of the solution to climate change, not another contributor to it. Carbon sequestration, eliminating my dependence on fossil fuels and eliminating waste are all a part of my vision.
