My farm plot plan for the next year is primarily based on producing dried culinary herbs and spices for direct sale, with goals to expand to wholesale fresh herbs and spices with improvements in logistics and production. Secondarily, I would like to grow for a farm based food bank or personal use. I believe in transparency, from the top down. I wish to work towards organic certification.
We are two young farmers specializing in growing herbs and spices. With our harvested products, we will offer dried and fresh herb products both via direct to consumer and online, with plans for wholesale. Our philosophy is to learn as much as possible, and pass our knowledge directly on to whomever is willing to learn themselves.
The herb and industry in Maine is currently comprised of various vegetable farms who offer a limited selection of fresh herbs, grocery store chains that offer hothouse herbs and various dried foreign/out of state herbs and spices, and various spice merchants that package their own foreign and domestic dried herbs and spices. The industry lacks variety in local, fresh herbs and spices, with a lot of herbs only being available in dried form, where a lot of herbs lose flavor and versatility. People that are locally creating herb and spice soaps, shampoo, and other products, are often sourcing their herbs from foreign/out of state sources, creating an only half “truly local” product (I’ve never seen a sandalwood grove in Maine). We plan to fill the void of variety of fresh local herbs and spices, while appealing especially to the adventurous home cook. We will not offer vegetables, so to better serve our purpose, but will link our customers to various local growers so that they can enjoy the benefits of local products.
