While Nate has held a job at the DOT I have worked at a local farm for the past 4 years. We currently have 4 gardens on our small 3/4 of an acre property and have been looking for more land in order to grow larger gardens for local sale and add livestock animals for sustainability. We’ve had a hard time in our area finding land that would be suitable as many out of state buyers often buy the homes for 2nd homes, or buy land to build second homes.

For the past three years we have raised meat rabbits on a large-scale operation (150-200 head). This operation includes an automatic watering system throughout the barn, which we designed ourselves, as well as a waste collection system. Additionally, this year we began bagging and selling the manure, which has been greatly beneficial to our farm.

Additionally, we raise coturnix quail for both eggs and meat, as well as chickens and ducks for the same purpose. This year we have also added angora rabbits, which we use for the fiber.

This is our third year raising hogs, which we currently raise on woodland.

We are a young homesteading couple with a winning attitude, a passion for the planet and our community. We have been maintaining nearly two acres of permaculture gardens and a micro orchard for the last five years. Our farming practices are completely organic and focused on bio sustainability and soil regeneration. Our philosophy also focuses on sharing our homesteading knowledge and the care-taking of local communities through the use of hands on self-reliance skills. Everyone should know how to tap a maple tree, make a loaf of bread and grow their own food.

I have been working on various farm types for my entire life. I have experience with horses, goats, sheep, pigs, cows, poultry, rabbits, and organic mixed vegetables. I attended the University of Maine in Orono for Sustainable Agriculture, where I ran the Black Bear Food Guild for one season, with one other female. We implemented several of my ideas for the farm, which helped it to make a large profit for the first time in it's existence. I did not finish my degree at UMO for various reasons, some which were out of my control, but I gained a lot of information while there. I have since been growing a small farm in Exeter, Maine. I grow mixed vegetables for a market and I also do duck and chicken eggs. I also have two horses that are pets, but also as grounds keepers, and manure compost suppliers. I have outgrown my current location, which I am currently renting, and would like to move to a larger piece of land where I can expand my operation and eventually go full time.

We love the idea of being self sustainable and one day maybe even having a small farm to table cafe so we can share and encourage others to familiarize themselves with nature too.

Good Day- My wife and I are 9-5'ers living in Boston and just expanded our family by 1 (a boy!) this past April. We are looking to move to a smaller, more family based community and have been looking on New England Farm Finder for the past year. Our current farming experience is limited but we have been stewards of our community garden here in Boston for many years along with being coordinators of the South West Corridor Park's Blackwood/Claremont Garen.. We are open to a variety of options if the opportunity is right but ideally would like to settle in the South coast area.

  • Farm Manager
Seeker(s) past and/or present farming experience:

I am just finishing a 5 year stretch working as a manager for Holly Hill Farm, a 2 acre organic vegetable farm in Cohasset, Massachusetts. Living on site, I helped manage their 140 wooded acres, mowing field edges and processing firewood. Myself and a crew of about 3 seasonal workers grew the farming business to 100K/yr in vegetable sales building several greenhouses and making other infrastructural improvements. In coordination with a non-profit education component, the farm was a great place for the whole community to visit for school group tours, farm to table dinners, plant sales, and workshops as well as the farm store on site. In addition to my most recent farming experience, I worked for 2 yrs at Urban Oaks Organic Farm, and have 6 years of experience as a Special Educator in various high schools prior in Connecticut, where I am originally from. It is my hope to settle down in Maine and start a vegetable growing operation of my own. The farming community has been very welcoming to me so far. I've been able to connect with several small farm owners who have shared with me their start-up experiences and suggested that I make this profile and try to connect with folks here. I am currently working for a property management company and for the Census in Portland, ME while I use this year to focus on my search for potential farmland. I am lucky enough to have a decent savings with which to get started should I find the right opportunity. Thank you to whomever is reading this for participating at whatever your capacity to make this a great resource to keep growers growing and land protected.
