We are a family of 6: a young, 21 year old farmer; 2 parents; 2 teenage brothers; and gramma.
Our eldest son has wanted to farm since boyhood. He is level headed, hard-working and beloved by all the farmers around us. He is currently finishing a second year of internship at Hawthorne Valley Farm in Columbia County NY. This is an 800 acre organic/biodynamic dairy farm with 54 milking cows and a CSA with 300 members. The production garden of 15 acres feeds not only the CSA members but also 3 markets in New York City and a large retail store.
Our son also has experience raising broiler chickens; rotational grazing beef cattle, caring for hogs and maple sugaring. As parents we bring skills in vegetable gardening, backyard chickens, goats and sheep, maple sugaring and the care of fruit trees and berries. Our son is now starting to get "suggestions" from his mentors that he is ready to start out on his own. We, his family, would like to be part of that and support him as he gets started.

We are a small farmstead 7sing organic practices selling produvt to family and friends. We have been doing small homesteading for one year. We currently have 2 steers and heifer calf. 1 Gilt to be bred this year, and laying hens. We plan to find a farm to increase the amount of livestock we have and become certified organic using regenerative based pasture grazing management. We would like to incorporate sheep and meat birds next season. Our goal is to eventually have a micro dairy as well and produce milk, yogurt and cheese. We are currently working with SCORE for business planning and financial budgeting support. We have 2 young boys that are homeschooled and Shelby works off farm remotely. The boys are heavily involved in all aspects of the farm. We have minimal past experience but have had some mentors along the way who have taught us shearing sheep, trumming hooves, cattle management and some milking. We are interested in a property that can support pasture based livestock and the hay needed for them. Approximately 50 acres of pasture/hay with more in forest land for pigs is preferable. We are interested in conventional sale but open to working on a farm to gain more experience and lease to own it or a gradual transfer of farm assets. We would require housing for our family and willingness to have young boys around in a lease to own situation.

Seeker(s) past and/or present farming experience:

My expertise is in managing trees, first with date palms in an ornamental capacity, then citrus in small suburban groves, and now apples over the last few years while we have looked for an orchard of our own. Since 2016, I have worked on multiple urban farms, from concept and creation to ongoing operations. I have provided consulting to other urban farmers for improving efficiency and production, and I have taught my methods in permaculture certification courses as a guest instructor.

Both of us have several years experience managing small businesses, and we both have experience in horticulture and hobby farm animal care. Since moving back to Maine, we have spent two summers vegetable gardening and have cared for goats and chickens on our homestead for since the fall of 2020.

My farming experience is a mix of work, volunteering, education, and life experience. I grew up in Hartford, Maine with a large garden, but didn’t really appreciate the benefits until I was older. About 10 years ago I connected with a new community garden program, and since then I have worked to prepare myself for operating a farm. My first step was in 2013 when I became a University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardener after a very competitive application process. I served the Orange County chapter for 7 years, maintaining my certification with volunteer hours and continuing education until I moved back to Maine in 2020.

In 2014 I started working for the City of Anaheim, first as a Program Specialist for an urban shade tree program and then as a Maintenance Coordinator at the Anaheim Convention Center, overseeing the care of two landscapes totaling 7 acres and over 400 ornamental trees. As Maintenance Coordinator I was part of the “Green Team” and gained experience with creating and maintaining records for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation.

During that time I also operated a small landscaping business with a focus on edible landscaping, backyard orchards, and small scale agriculture in urban and suburban settings. I performed site assessments, consultation, design, and installation for edible and resource conservation landscapes. This led to partnerships with similar organizations where I maintained gardens and small orchards. I also taught classes on composting, permaculture, and urban farming as a subcontractor, eventually co-founding a nonprofit with the mission of creating neighborhood farms and healing gardens to improve community wellness. We worked with community groups, other nonprofits, and residents to build urban gardens and backyard farms to provide education in gardening, food literacy, organic production practices, market garden management, resource conservation, and food security.

My overlap with the military veteran community gave me access to an internship opportunity through Veteran Farmers of America. I worked on two farms, an aquaponics and a traditional soil farm, to improve their operational systems, performing GAPs assessments, production projections, and cost analysis for capital improvements. I’ve attended seminars on farm management, financing, networking, marketing, and business planning at the 2015 Farmer Veteran Coalition Stakeholders Conference and 2016 San Diego Food Systems Alliance Urban Ag Conference. I was selected to represent Slow Food School Gardens at the Edible Schoolyard Academy, a 1 acre diversified urban farm with classes on farm management, fundraising, and community outreach. In 2018 I was accepted to join the NCAT: Armed to Farm Sustainable Farming Training which provided classes and farm tours covering diversified operations, production systems, GAPs, orchard care, perennial crops, business planning, marketing, and financing.

Shortly after moving back to Maine in March 2020, I worked with my mother to set up a small scale nursery program at her home. We produced approximately two thousand seedlings, which were used in her garden, donated to a local school garden for fundraising, and sold at a roadside stand along with honey from her bee hives. Her five years of beekeeping experience and herbalism knowledge will contribute to our farm business as well.

I worked for about a year at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta as a groundskeeper, learning the seasonal needs of landscape management in this climate. I modernized their policy and procedures, as well as the burial tracking system for the Southern Maine cemetery. I also started a composting program for our green waste to help improve the soil and water retention during dry summer months. I currently work at a landscaping company in Yarmouth as a fine gardener, maintaining a mixture of ornamental, perennial, and edible gardens.

Christina is currently employed in nonprofit finance and plans to continue having off-farm employment for the foreseeable future. Her vision is to manage the financial side of the farm business, including accounting operations, sales, retail, and marketing, and to provide employment for other people to support in these areas. Her strengths include accounting, marketing, retail, and business management. She has experience improving small business accounting systems, creating and maintaining websites and social media accounts, and using data to improve business operations and logistics. She also has experience in food production management as well as retail sales, both brick-and-mortar and online.

Her experience comes through working in a variety of small businesses, including a nonprofit community organization, a flour mill, several bakery-restaurants, and a specialty fermented foods shop. She has experience as a small business owner as well. For three years she ran a baking business producing bread and pastries [made with stone-milled whole grains and local fruit & herbs and sold at farmers markets] and teaching baking classes on making bread and pastry with whole grain flour and natural leavening.

I'm former asylee, and back in my native country I have had successful organic farming enterprise with multiple value added products. I also have specialized education in rural development from one of the best US schools, therefore I do have enough capacity to start and develop an own farming enterprise. I'm looking forward to work again in the field which brings me the most satisfaction from my work, and bring benefits to the local community I will settle in. If I will find the right land, I do not plan to move out from the farm until I physically will be unable to raise my hands.

We are looking to expand our land and enterprise while staying in Southern Maine. We are bound to have some growing pains as every business does but what we lack in experience we make up for in work ethic and drive to succeed. Angie and I have been farming mixed produce, herbs, and fruit on Westport Island for almost 20 years since 2003 as Tarbox Farm. We have been certified organic since 2005. After our first year farming we started selling directly to local farmers markets including Damariscotta, Boothbay, Brunswick, and Bath. Today we focus on one market in Bath which we attend year round. We have also been supplying the Rising Tide Co-Op in Damariscotta since 2004 year round. We lease our current property where we manage 40 acres and cultivate about nine acres. Of those nine acres we have been experimenting with a no-till market garden on about an acre. We also have four greenhouses which we grow in year round. We keep a very clean farm and consider ourselves stewards of the land we lease. In 2018 we also built a brewery on our farm. Sasanoa Brewing is the first MOFGA certified brewery in the state. We focus on belgian farmhouse ales which use mostly Maine grown organic grains as well as fruit and herbal adjuncts grown on our farm including hops, ginger, lime basil, blueberries, grapes, strawberries, rhubarb and more. Our website www.tarboxfarm.com and social media sites have lots of pictures of our fields, markets, and crops as well as our family.

I was born and raised in Connecticut but now call Maine home. I moved here in 2012 to pursue a degree in Sustainable Agriculture from the University of Maine. In college, I spent a summer working on a small vegetable farm at home in CT, where I fell in love with farming. At UMaine I managed the student high tunnels and grew greens for the university dining facilities. After I graduated, I moved to southern Maine to work on a 5-acre, organic, four season farm. I took on managerial roles during my three years there and eventually left to diversify my farming knowledge and experience. I am currently apprenticing at Frith Farm in preparation for starting my own organic,no-till CSA-based, farm as soon as next season. I am hoping to find land where I can finally put all my years of farm skills and experience to good use to establish my farm business and start feeding my community.

We have spent the last three seasons farming on a small, borrowed piece of land. We grow a variety of vegetables that we give, donation-based, to our community, and we grow all the ingredients for our popular line of four hot sauces. Prior to these past three seasons, Alyssa has volunteered for several weeks at a time on farms around the country, worked for an urban farm for a year, and managed farmers markets in NYC for three years. Nathan spent twelve months WWOOFing in South America and France before coming back to his home in Maine and spending eight full seasons creating a permaculture-based, market-garden sized farm on his parents' land, which is where we currently grow.

I caught the farming bug in 2013, caring for a grass-fed beef herd part time. Since then I've worked on several farms all along the east coast. This is my 6th season farming full time. Four of those years I worked on livestock farms alongside beef cows, dairy cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens. One of those years I worked on a 10 acre organic vegetable farm. This season I am working on a 2-3 acre organic, no-till vegetable farm in southern Maine. I've been an apprentice, farm hand, and assistant manager at some point or another throughout all this. I've learned from many teachers and experienced the highs and lows of working with the land and animals. I'm searching for a place where I can focus all my accumulated knowledge and experience into a small, organic, no-till diversified vegetable farm.

For the last 7 years, I have been the senior farmhand and builder on a MOFGA-certified organic farm in Scarborough. I want to start my own farm and I have the support and guidance of the two farmers that I have been working for. My goal is to find 2-7 acres of farmable land with a liveable house, garage, barn, and water & septic/sewer as close to the Buxton/Standish area as possible.

I am experienced operating machinery, installing farm infrastructure, including greenhouses, and managing many crops and poultry. I love working with chickens, ducks & Guinea hens and also want to start my own flock as a no-kill operation in addition to developing my own orchard, greenhouse, and gardens.

I work full time as a mechanic and I’m good at repairing equipment. I drive and operate tractors on the farm where I work. I currently live near Standish and work at a small, diversified farm, Goronson Farm, in Scarborough, Maine, while I look for land in the Buxton, Standish area to start a small farm of my own.

I love the animals on the farm where I work; they always come to greet me. I have taken care of the poultry and ducks on this farm for 7 + years in all kinds of seasons and situations and am a firm believer in the ethical and humane treatment of farm animals.

We began farming in 2009 and moved home to Maine to start our own farm two years later. Since then, we have owned and operated our own financially successful, MOFGA-certified organic farm on leased land. We grow 5-10 acres of produce every year, which we wholesale year-round to accounts in New England. Farming has been our sole source of income for the last 8 years.
We are financially prepared and eager to purchase our own land. We have a robust business plan and we are pre-approved by our local bank for a mortgage to purchase the land and infrastructure we need. While we are poised to grow the business, we can pay the mortgage without any growth. Owning farmland will allow us to expand our farm business to satisfy unmet demand from our established customers, take on new customers, increase our soil stewardship practices, and provide permanent housing for ourselves.

I am a certified herbalist, Master Gardener, beekeeper, and I hand-spin/weave animal fiber. The Herbal Hare is not only my email address, but the name of my blog, and a business I would like to start growing and selling herbs, herbal products—such as soaps and lotions; beeswax candles and honey, and yarns made from natural fibers. All do quite well at local fairs and fiber festivals and would bring in a healthy flow of revenue. People like knowing that what they use on their skin and in their bodies is free of harmful additives and, ask any avid knitter, yarn made from animal fiber is far superior to the cheap acrylics found in the local department stores. There would also be classes and workshops offered, “weed” walks, and herb tours.
I learned to process wool/fiber from start to finish while working at a living history museum…including shearing, plucking, scouring, and carding, as well as the aforementioned spinning and weaving. I also managed a 9000 square foot herb garden at this museum, and directed the 12-15 volunteers who helped work it, gave tours and lectures similar to what I’m hoping to offer with The Herbal Hare. That herb garden included warmth-loving spices, such as cardamom and turmeric. I have additional work experience working in a greenhouse/nursery, which is necessary for those warmth-loving spices/herbs in the northeast.
What I have in mind is to raise the animals needed to produce the natural fibers myself. I currently raise chickens and ducks, and have two “pet” Nigerian Dwarf goats. These last were “free to good home” and a good segue into raising goats as they came from a small farm where children kept them well socialized. My doctor has recommended goat’s milk for me so I would like to add a small herd of dairy goats to the mix. Any bucklings would likely be wethered and used for Leaf It to the Goats.

Camden, ME as well as privately landscaping, growing herbs, and running a

deeping our own connection to and stewardship of a piece of land, but
bringing others into that connection as well. We want to see more
accessibility to spaces that were once private, welcoming people to
engage with growing produce and medicinal plants as well as the
experience of being nourished and revived by nature in general. Our
collective experience working in spaces that are based in social
engagement has endowed us with the skills to create a place that has
these elements rooted in education, community dinners and possible overnight stays. We

We are a young homesteading couple with a winning attitude, a passion for the planet and our community. We have been maintaining nearly two acres of permaculture gardens and a micro orchard for the last five years. Our farming practices are completely organic and focused on bio sustainability and soil regeneration. Our philosophy also focuses on sharing our homesteading knowledge and the care-taking of local communities through the use of hands on self-reliance skills. Everyone should know how to tap a maple tree, make a loaf of bread and grow their own food.
