I purchased the farm in August, 2014. This land has supported homestead farming activity for many years. The predominant (9.7 acres) soil type is Boothbay silt loam. Six acres of good quality pasture is devoted to rotational grazing for a small flock of sheep. I keep three brood sows on four acres of wooded land that skirt two sides of the property. A 20' x 60' garden area near the house is cover cropped, and a 17' x 48' high tunnel is nearing completion. The farm buildings consist of: a 30' x 36' gambrel barn with hay loft; two run in sheds are built off this barn; one 18' x 30' outbuilding housing meat rabbits and poultry; one 20' x 24' outbuilding for wood storage/shop. I have a 10' x 12' building on skids housing poultry, and another smaller building on skids.
In the two years I have been here, I have focused on addressing the structural needs of the buildings; fencing; improving the pasture; and working on other infrastructure needs. Completing the high tunnel is a goal for this Fall.
This property represents an ideal opportunity for a small, diverse farming operation. I am currently raising meat rabbits and selling locally to restaurants and retail under the Old Moses Farm label; rabbits are processed off farm at present. I keep a modest number of laying hens, and will be raising pastured meat birds beginning 2017. I have four high percentage East Friesian dairy ewes and am growing the flock with the intent of establishing a dairy to sell milk to local cheese makers. The ram lambs are grown out on pasture and sold for meat. I keep three sows and breed for spring piglets; piglets are generally sold at weaning, though this year, I have raised seven for freezer meat for local people. I would like to begin growing vegetables here in the Spring of 2017.
The original farmhouse is quite old; an addition was put on in the 50's. When I bought the farm, I put new replacement windows throughout the house. A pine floor is new throughout the downstairs; tile floor in mudroom & slate hearth, both new. Downstairs has one bedroom; shower in the bathroom and washing machine; kitchen/living area all open; mudroom. Upstairs has a separate entrance to a stairway going upstairs. There is a bath with claw foot tub; large room on the back of house; smaller room that could be made into a kitchen area; small bed room on the front of the house. The house is heated solely with a super efficient wood stove that is in the main living area downstairs. A new drilled well supplies excellent quality water to the house and up to the gambrel barn.
My vision for this farm is to produce food for the local community through sustainable farming practices. At present, MOFGA is writing a transition to organic plan for the farm. I am interested in creating a CSA model for this farm in 2017. There is more work here than I can do by myself. I am hoping to find someone who would like to be involved in farming.
