Past and present farming experience:

We both grew up in Vermont and were exposed to farming and homesteads. Chad helped his grandparents build two log homes from their land when he was a teenager. Robyn has fond memories of haying on her grandfather's dairy farm and feeding calves from the bottle at her uncle's dairy farm. Her parents always had a huge garden, beef cattle, and hogs. She learned about food preservation at a very young age and continues this tradition today often using her mother's recipes. Her grandfather & uncle also had maple sugar operations which she was a part of.
As adults we have worked on the following farms:
Chad: Field manager for large scale (50 acre) vegetable production farm in Norwich, Vermont, Farm teacher at "The Farm School" for adults in Athol, MA, field worker in Livingston Manor, NY. He is also a master gardener. Chad has many skills that come in handy on a farm. He was a mechanic for 20 years and can fix most farm machinery including tractors. He is also skilled in carpentry, electrical, and plumbing. We remodeled our last home (1913) from the ground up.
Robyn: Two different small raw dairies specializing in cheese, butter, and yogurt...one in Gill, MA, the other in Summit, OR. Large scale berry farm in Gill, MA. Robyn was also a Maine Registered Guide in her mid-20's and took people on many rivers throughout Maine. She fell in love with the diverse landscape, people, and natural world there.
We are currently in Maine as of May 21st, 2018 to live here permanently.

Here is a summary of the vision for my farming future and/or business plan:

We are very committed to keeping farmland in Maine. Having opportunities to learn and grow on farms in New England was paramount in the development of our principles . We want to offer these same opportunities and traditions to children and adults today in hopes of creating similar values and a passion for farming. We also want to engage our community and share animals, crops, chores, and provide vacation relief for other farmers to encourage self-care.
Our farm will be a diversified farm with animas, crops, orchards, pastures, and a woodlot. We will offer educational classes and experiences to children and adults. We also want to provide a space to "be" and not just "do". We feel this is especially important in our current culture of keeping busy. By creating a beautiful space that incorporates nature and offering the opportunity to simply witness, we hope to cultivate appreciation and peacefulness. We would like to provide a farm-stay by way of a cottage, yurt, or rooms in the farmhouse. Making this affordable for everyone is also important to us and we will provide scholarships and sliding scale opportunities.
We also feel it is extremely important to help other aspiring farmers who may not have the means to start their own farm. It took us almost 10 years to be able to have the financial means to buy our own farm. As we age we would like to bring on farm managers who could then continue on with our farm.
We have off-farm skills that we can use to supplement our income if necessary. Robyn is a registered nurse and certified yoga teacher. Chad is a certified k-12 art teacher and automotive technology teacher. He was also the owner and operator of a successful handyman business.
