Past and present farming experience:

I've grown up watching and working alongside my father and grandfather on their 1/2 acre family gardens in Saco. I studied environmental science at UMaine (graduated in 2013) and have always enjoyed working outside and with the land. Since graduation I have worked on golf courses, but have always had an interest in small local farms and possibly one day starting my own. I currently do not work on a farm and have never worked on a farm, but am anxious to begin a career in farming. I'd like to raise pastured poultry as well as manage a small vegetable garden.

Here is a summary of the vision for my farming future and/or business plan:

I've really taken an interest in pastured poultry recently. I would like to start small and slowly grow my operation as I build a loyal customer base working farmers markets and potentially starting a small CSA. For the first year I will remain at my current job, as I build infrastructure needed, prepare soils, etc. From my studies of successful farms, I've noticed that small farms can be profitable. Other than pastured poultry I will eventually grow varieties of lettuce, arugula, kale, spinach etc as they take up limited space and can be harvested many times a year. I will be the only person on the farm for the first year, with the hope of being successful enough that my wife could also work on the farm.
