Past and present farming experience:

For the past 30 years life has revolved around horticulture. Since working as a Maine Organic Farmer and Gardener Association apprentice in the late 80's, my passion for growing flowers has taken many forms. First learning my way around farming happened Down East in Brooklin, Maine. From there I started a business working as a professional gardener on the Blue Hill penninsula. Eventually this business expanded to garden design. Several seasons working in a greenhouse rounded out my plant propogation skills.

The birth of my daughter ushered in change in many ways, including relocating to midcoast Maine. Garden design would continue while my daughter was young. Additionally, I became a Maine Master Gardener. My long dream of starting a flower farm happened in 2004. Passionflower Farm was an organic certified flower farm in West Bath with two acres of perennials, shrubs, fruits and heirloom cutting flowers and bulbs under cultivation. I learned beekeeping at this time and kept bees, along with chickens, bunny, dog and cats. Selling cut flowers at the local farmer's markets inspired the next evolution as a floral designer for weddings. This blossomed into a storefront retail business with flowers from the farm being sold as part of my small floral design studio.

As sometimes happens in life, unexpected circumstances changed my path for a period of time. Needing to walk away from the farm was not easy. Anyone that has taken a raw piece of land and built something beautiful knows this bittersweet feeling. As a gardener and farmer, I understand that everything is impermanent and always changing. This is actually what gives me tremendous hope. And why I am now seeking another piece of land to cultivate into a flower farm.

Currently, I own a small floral design studio in Brunswick, Maine and source all my flowers from local flower farms. My interest in being able to provide local and sustainable flowers is at the heart of my new business. I am a flower farmer without a flower farm!

Here is a summary of the vision for my farming future and/or business plan:

Yes. Currently, I own a small floral design studio specializing in wedding and event floral design. My background as a flower farmer turned floral designer motivates the importance of supporting local and sustainable flower farmers. My plan to start growing my own flowers as soon as possible is part of the business vision to supply " farm to vase" flowers to our customers. As an experienced flower farmer, I am now seeking a piece of farm land to lease or rent long term, or lease to buy. Returning to a farm based model is also desired to offer floral design and flower growing workshops located on a working flower farm.
