Past and present farming experience:

We are a young duo with a very diverse history of farming experience.
We met at UMASS Amherst while we were both employed at Cold Spring Orchard, a 60+ acre research station growing primarily tree fruits and perennial berry crops. At Cold Spring and the Stockbridge School of Ag we learned about and practiced IPM management principles, variety development and marketing, and basic orchard management (pruning, harvest, post-harvest handling, value added production). Our personal interests took us in the direction of cider making, custom grafting and nursery development, and the potential for Organic orchard management systems.
Edgar holds a BS in Plant, Soil and Insect Sciences from UMASS. He has completed a formal apprenticeship at a 30+ acre Certified Organic CSA vegetable operation, as well as managing labor and operations on other vegetable farms. He is most proud of his work managing a small, high bush blueberry / apple & pear orchard for a private client (utilizing IPM and Organic techniques), and facilitating an educational Orchard Renovation Project at Hampshire College.
Liz's primary interests in agriculture are small, diverse livestock operations and the importance of livestock-integrated systems in soil health and remediation. While enrolled at the Stockbridge School of Ag, I (Liz) focused on soil sciences, pre-vet research on small ruminants, and hands-on work with local farmers developing rotational grazing systems. In 2014 I graduated from Stockbridge with honors and earned an AS in Sustainable Agriculture. I have experience working with many species, including meat goats, beef cattle, sheep, broiler & layer chickens, turkeys and rabbits, from general labor/internships to managerial positions.
Liz and Edgar established Salt Marsh Farm in 2015 in Essex, MA. We rent 6-10 acres on two parcels where we intensively graze small livestock species (sheep, hogs, chickens, turkeys, quail) for meat production. We are also working on developing a perennial fruit/nut tree nursery. We have been very successful in marketing our meat products to the local community, as well as doing outreach/education via grafting workshops and backyard consultation.
Edgar and Liz are resourceful and hard working, having always found off-farm employment in order to stay financially flexible.
We are ready for Salt Marsh Farm to find a forever home, where we can focus on building a perennial/tree and livestock integrated production system.
