Past and present farming experience:

I have been farming for 5+ years on mainly mixed vegetable and livestock operations. I just finished up my first season in Maine at a 7 acre market farm in Newcastle. I am very interested in a tractor-based, mechanized small scale (10-15 acres) vegetable farm with a strong incorporation of cover crops. My partner, Nate, has been farming for 4+ years with a focus on livestock, cover crops, and equipment operation/maintenance.

Counties being considered:
  • Kennebec County
  • Knox County
  • Lincoln County
  • Sagadahoc County
  • Waldo County

Types of enterprises considered:
  • Beef
  • Christmas Trees
  • Greenhouse
  • Herbs
  • Livestock
  • Vegetables

Total Acres Desired:

>10

Tillable Acres:

>5

Wooded acres:

Acres in Orchard/Fruit/Perennials:

Farm structures needed:
  • Storage
  • Greenhouses
  • Other Housing

Equipment needed:

It would be a great head start to have access to a tractor with tillage and front bucket capacity. It would be extra nice to have access to a cultivation tractor--something like a Farmall A.
Some basic implements such as discs, harrow, and flail mower or brush hog would be useful.
Other infrastructure is also ideal--barn, storage space, greenhouse/hoophouse, walk-in cooler.

Arrangement(s) considered
  • Short-Term Lease
  • Long Term Lease
  • Work to Own (Gradual Transfer of Responsibility & Farm Assests)
  • Partnership
  • Farm Manager

I am interested in farms with Conservation Easements:
  • Maybe (Please send me information)

Here is a summary of the vision for my farming future and/or business plan:

Our main focus for beginning the business is a vegetable CSA with supplemental income from a few selected crops for wholesale.

We are interested in farming cooperatively with an additional one or two people. This could take the form of each of us managing separate areas of the vegetable enterprise or growing the business to include other enterprises such as livestock, seed production, cut flowers, etc. Of course, discussion and structured plans would be necessary. This could grow into a multi-faceted CSA.

We are also very open to partnering with existing farmers/farm businesses with the potential for partial ownership in the future. This may begin as a farm manager role or as a more collaborative position.

If we started on our own, we would start small and focused and grow strategically over time. One idea has been to begin with a small (40 member) winter CSA and sell a handful of summer crops wholesale allowing us to work off farm during the very busy growing season. Ideally, we would be able to begin to work the land next season (2017)--turning over land if needed and managing successions of cover crops and begin to cultivate in 2018.
