Seeker(s) past and/or present farming experience:

I was a farm hand on a 2,000-acre high-desert Oregon hay and wheat ranch in the 1970s, a member of the Catholic Worker Noon Day Farm in central Massachusetts in the 1980s, and am currently assisting with livestock chores, tractor work and horse-logging at Darthia Farm in Maine.

While I am committed to living closely to the land, I am not principally a farmer, but I have a lifetime of skills that would be highly useful to a farmstead, including: design, engineering and construction; electrical and plumbing and HVAC; vehicle mechanics, machining, welding and general repair; and forestry, logging, sawmilling, and fine woodwork.

I am seeking a place where I could either use or build a small cabin home and a wood/repair shop in return for sharing my skills and trailer-loads of tools and equipment. I would want lifetime tenancy (I'm now 64 and don't expect to be around more than about ten more years) in return for leaving behind whatever I build and perhaps my tens of thousands of dollars worth of tools.

I would also need high-speed and reliable internet access, as what little income I make comes from on-line design and construction consulting, for passive-solar super-insulated homes.

Home organic gardening of common vegetables with a focus on heirloom garlic. Within the next several years I intend to start, as a commercial enterprise, a small-scale diversified organic market garden with a major focus on heirloom garlic. Until then, I'm hoping to find a small plot of land (an acre or less) to gain experience with growing garlic on a larger scale and to test out techniques that have worked well with growing garlic on a smaller scale. The availability of a shed of some kind would be ideal.

I grew up on a 5ac homestead in Monmouth, Maine. I helped my father maintain/restore the home and out-buildings. To this day I can't bring myself to hire someone to do carpentry work! We had the usual yearly cutting, splitting and stacking of cordwood. I raised chickens (my first flock were all roosters. Oops. So much for eggs that year!) and hogs (2 at a time). We had a large (1+ ac) garden, composted, and harvested a small sugar bush in the spring. At age 10, thanks to the Common Ground Fair and to my parents bewilderment, I became an apiarist. 8 yrs later I left for college and left behind 12 strong bee hives! Additionally, I worked cleaning stables and tending to several purebred Arabian horses owned by a neighbor. I planted and harvested corn, misc. vegetables, fruit and seemingly never ending bales of hay for another farm up the way throughout my teen years.

Presently, I'm not farming.
